Pony Express feature car: January/February 1994
I took a ride in Jim's black beast the day after Thanksgiving. This 9-second street car runs smooth; a testament of Jim's automotive wizardry. This is with the stock EEC-IV computer, mind you! And the cam, whose specifications Jim closely guards, gives the car a real nice idle. It's loud with it's 3-inch dual exhaust through Flowmasters. But the acceleration is indescribable. Jim took me on a back-road in Glen Carbon, IL (next door to Edwardsville, IL) where he gave a 1/3-throttle sample of the car's acceleration. 1/3-throttle and I was pinned back into the seat experiencing more g-force than any airplane takeoff I'd ever been through. And it kept going and going. It was simply awesome.

Update! Update!
We finally have made some passes with the new engine/turbo package. On Friday 7/12/96 our Mustang blasted a soft 1.70 60ft at 6.47 sec and 117.17mph in the eighth at 25 psi! Our convertor is too tight to make boost until 60 ft out and we are going to loosen it up about 1000 rpms. If we had accelerated under boost for 660 ft we would need 850 hp avg, to run this mph. Since the car did not come on boost until after 60 ft out our numbers indicate that the engine developed 925 hp on this pass! The quarter mile would be 10.08 sec at 150 mph! With the car leaving on boost and a 1.40 60 ft this would put the car at 9.18 sec at 152 mph! Consequently when we ran 9.72 at 141 mph in the quarter our eighth mile was 6.33 sec at 113.22 mph with a 1.38 60 ft. These are conservative numbers! On Saturday unfortunately our fuel pressure was down due to a low battery and running the engine on one pump to acheive 60 psi at wide open throttle as we had done on Friday the guage only read 50 psi which caused a lean condition and minor head gasket damage which has already been repaired. We were also warned to slow it down in the shut down area. I told the tech official that I practically put my foot though the floorboard trying to stop this thing. I was pretty shaken up and have ordered a chute and am looking at brake upgrades.

On Saturday 8/18/96 after extensively reworking the stock rear suspension and installing copper head gaskets on the "Black Beast" we ran 6.43 seconds at 119.82 mph with a 1.759 60 ft! This is over 1000 hp and as soon as we get the convertor sorted out high 5's will be in order. Estimated 1/4 mile performance on the above pass puts the car at 9.69 seconds between 154 to 158 mph! The car is going dead straight now which I have to admit is pretty amazing with 10.5 inch tires and stock suspension. I spoke to Neil Van Oppre on Monday 8/19/96 and informed him of our progess. He exclaimed "I'm impressed" I told him I considered that a complement and he said "You should because I don't impress easily"

Dave I'll e-mail all my specs as soon as possible. On Sunday at the Gateway Rumble in St. Louis, MO we ran 9.58 seconds at 145 plus mph on seven cylinders caused by a bad injector. The 60 ft was 1.45 seconds, the eighth was 115.14 mph. I'm disappointed that after babying the car over the last month or so to assure us the opportunity to go 8.9 's at 155 mph Father Fate dealt us a blow. one other note of importance was that we almost passed out when we weighed in at 3500lbs even! The minimum weight for the class was 2900 lbs. We were giving our competition a 600 lb weight advantage! I believe though that i have regained my place as the fastest Gateway 5.0 member now which is something to be happy about. The fans from the Gateway 5.0 Club were tremendous to us at the meet and we dedicate that success to each and every one of them.
